Over the span of multiple weeks, the US president began displaying all observers his intentions for a gilded ballroom twice the size compared to the White House and then commenced independently demolishing the East Wing to construct it.
He has done things 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of deaths from his cuts to international aid is 600,000 and increasing, and recently a study projected his petroleum strategies would kill an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No former leader would have dared – genuinely, no other president would have conceived – solo demolishing major areas of the executive mansion to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which conduct transactions with federal agencies.

As disorienting as it is to watch the chief executive try to upend the old idea about democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there exists a significant segment within America who should not find it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics a near majority – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have watched throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we learned about into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they converted a persona of compassion into a figure of hostility who blesses specifically the brutality that he condemned in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred more slowly, across decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
Hence I shall explain the Christ that I grew up with, because theoretically the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and because the fastest-growing cadre within America may possess limited understanding about him since they are non-believers or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; but I do think that exist valuable insights of great price within Christian narrative.

The obvious and straightforward truth that the Savior in biblical accounts advocates for a form of radical love centered on the impoverished has perpetually caused Christianity rather a scandalous religion: engaging for the masses, but due to its natural unconventionality demanding to be restrained. During the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – Protestantism was so prevalent that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Struggle for the Best Within Us
Hence I have become encouraged to observe the determined opposition regarding Trump emerge over the last twelve months.
